Hi Salty Friends,
Unless you just don’t pay attention, you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Guess what? Breasts . . . we’ve all got ’em–women and men. Cancer’s an indiscriminate bitch so it’s safe to say that you will very likely know someone in your lifetime, if you don’t already, who will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
There are plenty of ways to get involved in fundraising, awareness, and support, but even if breast cancer isn’t your cause du jour, it certainly doesn’t hurt to educate yourself about it. These sites might be a way to ease you in to some awareness of your own.
MedicineNet.com – It’s always nice to be able to have a conversation, or to know a little bit about a topic in order to be a good friend, neighbor, or family member. This site is a good place to start. Take a quiz to check how much you already do and don’t know about breast cancer.
Expedition Inspiration – Sure you can run or walk for breast cancer awareness and research but this amazing organization reaches new heights with hikes and mountain climbing. Hiking and climbing requires regular exercise which lowers a person’s overall cancer risk. Funds raised go above and beyond each expedition and the organization has an impressive history of cutting edge research, funding, activism, and public education. Though pink is in their logo, they are not fluffy. We’re telling you, just Take A Hike!
Keep A Breast Foundation – Young people are not immune to disease. This is the leading youth-focused, global, nonprofit breast cancer organization we know of and we can’t say enough about it. They remove a lot of stigma and fear for young people and make it easy to get educated, advocate, and get involved. Download their free Check Yourself App.
CharityNavigator.org – There are always plenty of organizations for any given cause. Charity Navigator evaluates charities and rates them based on their financial performance and their Accountability & Transparency. That’s a nice resource to have access to if you’re going to donate a chunk of change. Here is their list of Charities Working to Prevent and Cure Breast Cancer.
Breast cancer awareness is important and it’s going to be for a long time. Please feel free to add to the causes for breast cancer awareness in the comments. If you love yourself, love your boobies. Learn how to do a breast self-exam.
