I’ve been on a quest for an all natural deodorant that doesn’t suck. As you might have seen in my post, All Natural Products I Don’t Think Suck, I’ve been making a major life switch to natural products and in my opinion, most of them are awful. I’ve been hopeful about deodorant because my boyfriend, a very tall, athletic, 20-something man uses natural deodorant and he only rarely starts smelling funky. This should be a good sign, right? So far, not so much.
I think he might not actually be human.
Regardless, my quest continues (my extremely challenging quest) and here is a list of the ones I’ve tried so far with the pros and cons of each.
The first time I swiped this under my pits I thought I had found armpit nirvana. It was light and completely unscented. I smelled like clean and fresh me rather than that weird baby powder smell you get from a lot of deodorants. It was awesome, like I wasn’t wearing deodorant, but I was also not stinking even post workout. Then I put it on for about the fifth time.
Maybe someone tampered with my stick or something but this deodorant turned into a stick of doom. It was so sticky and awful. My pits got stuck to themselves every time I put my arms down and little fuzzies from my clothing got caught in my pits and made it look like I hadn’t shaved in months. It’s attempt to be an antiperspirant was upsetting. To add insult to injury, I started stinking big time. When mom kicked me out of the car to take a shower after I had only been sitting all day I knew this one had to die.
Those Anti-sweat Crystals
This is what my man uses. He usually gets the lavender scent which is earthy and mild smelling even when a funk develops. I actually borrow his all the time and I like it. It’s kind of like the Desert Essence stuff but less sticky and I don’t sweat like crazy when I use it. My qualm with this is I’m kind of allergic to it. There’s something in there that my skin does not like and the end result is sometimes not pretty. My allergic reactions to it are totally inconsistent so it’s always a gamble which makes this not my brand of choice.
OK, I love this one. It’s got all the right things and it works which is really the most important thing when we’re talking about all natural deodorant. In the heat it’s a little iffy because it is not an antiperspirant so you sweat like God intended. I recommend skipping wearing sleeves when possible. The second issue is that the smell is super musky and overwhelming. I like and dislike the smell at the same time. My boyfriend dislikes it enough that I switch up my deodorant when we visit each other so he can snuggle with me happily. This one is close but no cigar.
Shout out to The Honest Company!
This is my next attempt. The Honest Company is a company that was started by Jessica Alba after she wanted her babies to have all natural diapers. She wound up making a whole line of baby and momma products that then became all around personal care products. I have a lot of faith in Jessica so we will see how it goes. I’ll keep you all posted.
If you know of any deodorant that is totally natural that I haven’t tried but you would recommend, please please please….please tell me about it. Seriously. I’m over being the stinky hippie girl.
